Chapter 49 - The Years That Followed

After our wedding night in my room, we had breakfast with the King and prepared ourselves for the travel back to Phillip's Kingdom that would take place that night. We stayed in the room for about two hours after breakfast because Phillip wanted more of last night before we left. It was scary how much I wanted him, too.
- What's wrong? - he asked, lying next to me, caressing my arm on the bed.
- I was thinking about everything. I'm worried. - I said, coming back from my thoughts.
- Worried about what? I thought you had thought it through and made up your mind. What happened? - He said, turning to me so his eyes looked deep into mine.
- What if we suffer another attack? What if someone comes for Claus again? What if you die? - I started to tremble, and he held me in a hug, while I buried my face in his chest.
- My sweet queen, there's no point in thinking about the future, there are many what... calm down, just feel how much I love you and how I'm here, with you now and forever. - He tightened his embrace around me a little more.
I began to feel protected, and how could I not be, in the arms of that loving vampire who loved me more than any other being in the world.
I spent most of the way to Phillip's kingdom sleeping, it seemed like I had been hypnotized to do so, and I think he did it so I wouldn't feel the transition at the entrance to his kingdom, which didn't work very well, because when we passed the magical border I woke up with a strong pain in my stomach that made him stop the carriage. I had to get out to vomit. Unlike the first time, this time, after the terrifying episode of completely emptying my stomach at the border, I saw everything go dark in my vision and fell to the floor.
I woke up lying on a bed that I didn't recognize. I think I was in Phillip's room. Someone had changed my clothes, and it was morning. I sat up in bed and looked around. I seemed to be alone in the room.
I got up and walked to the door and heard Phillip's voice behind me:
- Where are you going? - I turned my head and could see him get up from a chair facing the window and quickly reach me.
- A... are you here? What happened? - I asked, disoriented.
- We arrived two days ago. You got sick at the border and passed out. Our doctor tested you because you wouldn't wake up. I think the spell that protects me from the sun is bad for you, so I'm thinking about removing it. - Phillip said, holding me by the waist.
- NO! - It came out louder than I imagined, I said, turning to face him.
- If it's bad for you, you won't stay there. - he said, lifting my chin so I could look into his eyes.
- No, without the spell, you would be locked up inside the palace during the day., I don't want that! - I said assertively.
- But... - I don't let him finish the sentence and kiss him. - I was really afraid of losing you when you passed out. - he says, moving away a little.
- It only happens when I cross the border. - I said, trying to calm him down, but I saw the terror on his face.
- Has it happened before? The last time you were here? - He holds my shoulders tightly
- Yes, whenever I enter or leave the magical border, but it's not something I'm going to do very often, is it? - I said, pulling him closer to me and towards the bed...
- Your Majesty just woke up after two days. This might not be safe, my dear. - he says, trying to avoid getting too close
- I'm fine, hungry, a little thirsty, but fine, and I want you. - I say, throwing him on the bed.
- I can ask them to prepare a meal for you, before... - I kiss him again, and this time he doesn't try to resist.
…………………………………………………………………….
We tolerated the border issue for years, rarely crossing it, but despite that, we maintained the spell. Gradually, I noticed some signs of the passage of time in Phillip, initially a few strands of gray hair, which was very unusual for a vampire, and some wrinkles. I also aged, and contrary to my friend the Count's expectations, we had three children: a girl, Alice, and two boys, Tommy and James.

After more than 70 years together, Phillip passed away from old age... not even my friend Luke, who still kept in touch through letters, understood, but we realized he had aged. I did too... all of this was very frightening, but at the same time, joyful.

Our three children stopped aging when they turned 18, another frightening fact. All three had human characteristics, could be exposed to sunlight, and vampire characteristics, being extremely strong and with a frightening palate, and could only eat raw meat.

When they turned 15, they realized they were different, so Phillip and I decided to tell them about their father being a vampire. They understood, but still questioned some strange things that were happening to them.

Chapter 48 - It's Done

After long moments of dancing in a way that teased me, eventually pulling me closer to his body and making me realize how much he wants to leave the party, the now King Phillip takes my hand and gently bows.

- Your Majesty, may we take our leave from the party? - he gives me a sly, charming smile.

- Yes, young King. Rest for today. Will you be leaving early tomorrow? - The king asks cheerfully. - Goodnight, my daughter!

- Your father told me he prepared a room for us. Your Highness, do you know which room it is? - Phillip whispers in my ear while he sneakily drags me out of the hall, weaving between the guests.

We make our way up the stairs to my room, and when we reach the door, there's a big wreath of wildflowers. I turn the doorknob and am surprised by a completely different decor than the one I had left. On the table by the window, there’s a huge vase filled with flowers. The white sheets and a burgundy quilt adorn my bed. Even the curtains of my canopy are new, in burgundy and gold. There are flowers in every corner and countless rose petals scattered on the floor at the foot of the bed. The whole room seems to suggest what Phillip already desires to fulfill.

Behind me, Phillip hugs me and kisses my neck, making me melt. A strong urge to kiss him back and stay in that position for a long time washes over me. Phillip closes the door and locks it with the key. I notice a tray of fruits on the table by the window, along with a pitcher of water and a bottle of wine. When I turn to face Phillip, he stops kissing me and looks deeply into my eyes:

- What's wrong? - he asks in a voice almost like a whisper.

- I don’t know what to do. - I say with a bit of tension and fear.

He then takes a small step back and continues to speak.

- I won’t do anything you don’t want, but only when you want.- he now stops hugging me and heads towards the wine on the table.

- I honestly don’t know what to do. - I say as I approach Phillip and hug him from behind.

- My princess, you don’t need to know; I can teach you and guide you every step of the way. But I won’t do anything you don’t want, even if this whole room is screaming for me to take you and make you mine. - he says, turning to me and handing me a glass with a bit of wine.

- Phillip, believe me, I want to, but I’m scared, and yet I still want to. - I said, taking a sip, resting the glass down, and walking towards Phillip to kiss him.

He then picks me up and lays me on the bed while kissing me teasingly. He kisses my chin and moves down to my neck, reaching my cleavage. He takes off his blazer and shirt, and the sight of his bare chest is magnificent, with perfectly defined muscles. He looks like a Greek god in front of me. At that moment, I realize I’m embarrassed to undress, but he gently unties each ribbon of my dress, and I feel his hand touch the bare skin on my back.

As he loosens the bodice of the dress, he continues kissing from my neck to my shoulder. I sigh nervously, and Phillip softly pulls away, saying:

- Oh, how I’ve longed to see you like this, my beloved! - he says, admiringly, looking directly at my naked body.

He gently runs his hands over my body and gets up from the bed, removing the rest of my dress and tossing it to the floor. He unbuttons his pants, and my nervousness increases. My anxiety rises as I see him naked. He looks like a sculpture. Every muscle and every line of his perfect body. He lies back down gently over me and kisses me again. He then whispers in my ear:

- Are you sure you want this?

I can barely breathe; my heart is racing, and I just nod in agreement.

- I need to hear a 'yes,' my princess. - he says as his hands glide over my bare body.

- Y...yes. I want to. - I say, almost out of breath, trying to keep my heart racing.

- The beats of your heart are driving me wild. If you only knew how euphoric that makes a vampire. - he says, his eyes changing to a bright yellow.

Suddenly, I can feel, amidst the kisses, when he thrusts deep inside me and I let out a scream of both pain and pleasure. He gets startled but then smirks mischievously. And then whispers:

- The pain will fade... - I hear with a warm breath on my neck.

Then he begins to move in and out slowly, so the pain isn’t too intense. A pleasant sensation of pleasure floods my body, and he realizes the discomfort is gone, so he starts making more vigorous movements. I begin to lose control, sweating a lot as I try to catch my breath. The pleasurable feeling intensifies, and I can sense that I'm reaching my peak. I feel Phillip is also close to coming.

After it all, Phillip collapsed exhausted next to me, pulling my body close to his and stroking my hair. He then turns me to face him and says straight into my eyes:

- It's done. Now you're mine forever.

Chapter 47 - A Wedding and a Coronation

Looking at myself in the mirror, the image thrills me. This is it! I'm ready. An off-white dress, with a modest neckline, a voluminous skirt, completely adorned with ruffles and rhinestones, worthy of a princess like me, accompanied by a long, embroidered veil. Light makeup on my face, and my hair is delicately tied in a bun full of loose curls that frame my face. Delicate shoes to complete the entire outfit.

My maid leaves the room, informing me that she will call the King. I take three deep breaths. The nervousness of the wedding is already stressful in itself, but knowing where I'm going and who I'm marrying makes me even more tense. Everything I've done and every path I've taken to get here makes me think about how much I truly love Phillip and want to be there.

My mind wanders to the moment I saw him for the first time, on the run to the cabin. My first visit to the crypt. The beautiful sight of Phillip sleeping in the coffin. Then I remember when he killed an entire pack of wolves to keep me alive in the forest at night. I wander back to the moment I visited Phillip's palace, I remember his illness and how I was crazy enough to travel to Paris in search of a cure for him.

My thoughts are interrupted by the knock on my door.

- Who's there? - I say, being dragged out of my memories.

- Your father. - I hear the King's voice, who answers as he opens the doors and walks towards me.

When he saw me, I saw tears forming in the corner of his eyes. He walks towards me and pulls me into a tight hug.

- Daddy, you're going to crumple me. - I say, drying the tears running down his face with my handkerchief.

- My daughter, you look so much like your mother now. - He lets me go from the hug - Let's go, the ceremony is about to begin. The prince said he doesn't want to go straight to his kingdom right after, because he thinks you won't be able to handle a trip right after the ball. He asked me if you would mind staying with him here on your first night as a married couple.

- W...what do you mean? - I said, unable to think straight.

- You will spend your wedding night here. I was going to ask if my daughter would prefer to spend the night in her room or if I prepare one of the other rooms for you? - he asked me softly, gently pulling me out of the room.

- Can we stay in my room? - I said it more as a question than as a choice.

- I will have the servants prepare the room for you. - The King says as we walk through the door towards the stairs.

We continue walking to the doors of the Chapel, crossing the garden. The King calls my maid and asks her to prepare my room for the couple. I take a deep breath, feeling nervousness overcome me. And the King is talking to comfort me. The chapel's door is right in front of us, and my heart skips a beat. A servant hands me a large bouquet of wildflowers with a bunch of lavender in the middle. I give a slight smile, nodding my head in thanks.

I walk delicately on a carpet of petals towards the altar, next to the King. I look ahead and observe the chaplain of the kingdom.

I notice Phillip on his left.

The prince looks back at me and gives me a wide smile, which eases my nervousness a little. I smile back. I am happy, but I also start to daydream again about the moments we had together.

I remember our first kiss and all the times he protected and saved me. The fixed smile on his face makes me feel calmer. A pleasant song plays in the background as I walk. "Oh, how long this chapel is!" - I daydream as I almost reach the altar.

- Your Majesty, the King, will you allow me to continue with your princess? - Phillip approaches us and bows before my father as he asks.

The king nods and hands my hand to Phillip's.

The chaplain begins the ceremony, which, following tradition, takes hours. We say our vows, but time seems to fly by with Phillip looking at me with those eyes. Following tradition, the King goes up to the altar. The scepter and crown are brought to his hands. The chaplain says a blessing, then the King takes the scepter, hands it to Phillip, and then places the crown on his head.

- Long live King Phillip III! - my father says in a voice that echoes throughout the chapel.

After the ceremony, we walk arm in arm to the ballroom.

As we pass through the large doors of the ballroom, all adorned with beautiful wildflowers, we enter a room full of sounds, with musicians playing on a stage. There is a huge dining table, all the seats duly marked, Phillip sitting on my left, and the King in the center of the table on my right.

After the banquet, Phillip and I danced a waltz. As per protocol, the King also danced a waltz with me. The party flowed with lots of conversation, some quite boring, but others more enjoyable. Phillip invited me to dance again, and when I accepted, he took advantage of the dance to whisper in my ear:

- I think we've enjoyed the party enough and complied with all royal protocols. - he whispered as we danced, and he pulled me closer to him.

Chapter 46 - Another talk

Standing in front of the huge rosewood doors carved with lion figures, I took a deep breath, because I could already imagine what the king would say to me. Remembering the night before, I could see that Phillip had followed me. He had been in the castle the whole time, and I had gone to the cabin. How could I have been so stupid and believed he would leave me before our wedding? How could I have thought he would want some time or some distance? He was the one who wanted it the most. I gathered my courage and pushed the doors open hard. To my surprise, the Duke was sitting facing the king.

- Your Majesty called me? - I said when they both turned to look directly at me.

- Yes, Your Highness may sit down! - Dad said, pointing to the chair next to Lucas. - Duke, we will continue our conversation later. -  The king said to Lucas, who stood up and went out of the office.

- Where did you go last night? Why did one of my guards bring me this report yesterday? - If it weren't for your suitor, the future king, perhaps if someone else had seen you in that state... you're still weak and hurt yourself, but you're stubborn, you don't obey me. I thought you wanted to get married today! - he finished by banging his fist on the huge, solid wooden table between us.

- I'm sorry, Dad. - I said, thinking about the excuse I would give. - After everything that happened, I thought about putting lavender branches in my bouquet to bring luck to the marriage. There was no lavender blooming in our garden, and I remember that I saw some near the castle, in the forest. I ended up hurting myself. I also didn't imagine that I was still so weak... - I spoke quickly and almost without breathing, imagining what was going on in the king's mind and how he would or wouldn't believe my lie

- Do you want me to cancel the wedding? - The king spoke in a harsh voice and was interrupted by a knock on the door

- Your Majesty called me? - Phillip came in imposingly and, without looking at me, sat down next to me

- Prince Phillip, the decision is yours, because there are only a few hours left until the ceremony, and I don't know if I believe that a few lavender branches would be the reason for my daughter's nocturnal escape, but in a few hours, this stubborn girl will be your responsibility. - the king said, pointing in his direction

- Lavender? Is that why I found you yesterday unconscious and being helped by one of the guards? - he looked into my eyes delicately, and I swallowed nervously

- Y... Yes, lavender..., I read it helps in beginnings. - I said softly

- Your Majesty, I think it is a good cause. The princess must have been anxious today. Let's continue. I'm going to my chambers to dress up; we have little time. - My fiancé quickly got up and left

- You heard your fiancé. Get up and go get ready. I'll ask your maid to put the lavender branches in your bouquet. Now go! - the king ordered, pointing to the door.

I got up and walked quickly to the door. I went up the stairs just as quickly. I reached my room and closed the door. I went into my bathroom and lay down in the bathtub for a long, aromatic bath. At the end of the bath, I quickly called my maid to help me, because I needed to get ready and the dress was grand.

Chapter 45 - The night before

Finally, I went downstairs to the dining hall. The king met me halfway and took me by the arm so that I would enter by his side to the hall. My father was acting strangely protective that night, and I didn't understand why. When I arrived at the hall, I noticed that the guests were seated in a different order. The prince was at the table's opposite end from my father, but Luke was at his right.

It was strange to be sitting so far away from the prince, but I felt that there was something wrong. The king was going to make an announcement. He told me about his intentions as we walked through the palace corridors until we reached the hall. Phillip looked with some disdain at Luke, who, despite being in front of me, always sat to the king's left, not receiving my attention. Just before we began the meal, the king stood up and began:

– Tomorrow, my daughter, the sole heir to my throne, will marry. I will have a son, Prince Phillip, who will also be crowned King of his kingdom tomorrow. The wedding was the last detail that was needed for him to be entitled to his title. We will have both ceremonies together. Today, after the meal, the gentlemen are invited by the king to a separate celebration. – After finishing speaking, the king sat down and began to eat.

I felt tense. Celebration only among the gentlemen? I could barely eat, although the king did not seem to notice my tension; he noticed the almost untouched plate.

– Are you feeling unwell, my daughter? – said the king, looking directly at my plate.

– No, Your Majesty. Forgive me, I was lost in my thoughts. – I replied, going back to eating.

– Oh, good! – said the king, looking into my eyes – I will not accept any more postponements, nor will I accept my daughter fainting in the middle of tomorrow's celebrations. As soon as you empty your plate, your maid will take you to your room to rest.

– But, father, what celebration is this that you are planning for today? – I asked, dropping the cutlery, and the sound of it falling onto the plate echoed throughout the hall, bringing a sudden silence and making everyone's eyes turn to me.

The king made a slight movement with his hand so that everyone could go back to eating. He looked straight into my eyes and replied:

– Never do that again! I have planned a night of games and drinks for the male party guests. Yes, only for the men! I shouldn't share this with my daughter, but I'm afraid you won't finish your plate if I don't explain what I intend to do. By the way, you will leave after the party with King Phillip for his kingdom tomorrow night.

– But I still need to prepare something. How will I do that? I haven't even said goodbye... – Before I could finish my speech, Luke interrupted me

– You know you need to finish eating and that the king is worried about your departure tomorrow because the last time you were there, you couldn't handle the trip? – he asked, pointing to my plate, still full.

– You're right. – I replied, going back to eating. I stopped asking questions and also stopped looking around, looking only at my plate and emptying it.

As soon as I finished, Anna positioned herself behind me. I asked the king and the other nobles for permission and realized that Phillip had already left the table. Where was he? I took a deep breath. I needed to sleep, but where was my fiancé? My head wouldn't stop questioning.

I asked Anna to leave me alone when I got to the room. I heard my maid's footsteps disappear in the hallway, and I left the room silently. I reached the last step of the stairs without being heard. I watched from outside the hall, and all the ladies had already gone to their bedrooms, but the prince was not there. I went out to the garden. The night was beautiful, but I was looking for Phillip.

I passed through the gates. Had he gone to the cabin? I thought as I walked quickly through the forest. I felt my weakness return when I got to the cabin. I sat down on the bed before going down to the crypt. I went downstairs and realized that the crypt was lit by torches as always, and from a corner I hadn't noticed a familiar silhouette appear.

– Your Highness shouldn't be here. – I heard Luke's voice say.

– What are you doing here? – I said, unable to keep the tension out of my voice. – No mortal can see this cabin. And the crypt is hidden!

– But you see, don't you? – he replied with an ironic tone.

– Yes, Phillip built it like this so that I could see him, find him. – I said, holding back my anger.

– In other words, all this time, he manipulated you so that you would love him. – I saw a dagger shine in his hand.

– What do you want here, Duke? – I heard Phillip's voice behind me on the steps.

– I wanted to explain to the princess how creatures like you act. Working your entire web to seduce your prey! – I saw anger in Luke's eyes, who began walking towards me.

– If you hurt him, you will only push me further away from you, Luke! – I said threateningly, but he came closer and grabbed my arm

– I will keep explaining to you, my princess, how these creatures have all their actions calculated; they are cold beings, they do not fall in love and do not love. – He pulled me close to his body, holding my wrist and making a slight cut on my hand.

I could see Phillip's eyes change color when he saw the cut. It hurt a lot. I don't know if it was because of my anger or because of the weakness or maybe the pain, but I kicked the Duke.

He fell to the ground, and I ran up the stairs and out of the cabin. All the tension Luke had put me through only made my condition worse. I was weak, but I needed to get back to the castle.

I ran through the forest and finally saw the guards and the gate. I got very close to the gates and called for help. The moment one of the guards reached me, I fainted. Everything went dark so quickly and became so silent. I wonder if Phillip had left there. I wonder if he was okay. I dreamed about the wedding the whole night.

The next morning, I woke up with the sun streaming through the windows and Anna bringing me coffee on a tray:

– Your Highness shouldn't venture into the forest on the eve of the wedding. – She said, leaving the tray on the table near the window. – The King said he'll be waiting for you after breakfast in his study.

Anna's words seemed like knives, another scolding, or maybe bad news right after breakfast. I looked at the place where Luke had cut my hand, and there was a bandage. I didn't remember how I got to my room, much less who changed my clothes. But as soon as Anna walked out the door, Phillip came out from behind the curtain in the room and sat on the edge of the bed.

– It was me. I came to find you falling in the arms of one of the guards, and picked you up and carried you to your room. Then I took off your shoes and part of your dress, but I didn't do anything inappropriate, don't worry. I put a bandage on your hand, I think it will leave a scar... – He said, holding my hand

– What are you doing here? Are you crazy? If the king finds you here... – I whispered.

– We are a few hours away from our wedding and my coronation. And your father will ask what you were doing outside the gates, and I am worried that he will question whether you would be able to get married today, because I think that was Luke's wish, to postpone it once again.

– I don't want to! – I said, standing up quickly and almost falling

– The king will not want to know your opinion and will call me. I need you not to tell him what really happened. I need you to make up a silly excuse. When I am called, I want you to remain silent and allow me to answer the king. This could postpone our wedding, so I need you to do as I say, okay? – he said, standing up and walking to the door. Before leaving, he turned and said – I love you!

I was left alone with my thoughts and those three words wandering in my mind. Anna came in when I was already finishing my breakfast. After helping me get dressed, we went to the king's study.

Chapter 44 - Another Interjection

Before I answered, we heard a knock on the door. It was Anna. I had to try the wedding dress one last time, and she came to pick me up to do that. I got up in a hurry. I asked for permission from the prince and followed my servant to the room where two seamstresses and other maids were already.

I wore the wedding dress that looked slightly wider, but nothing that small last-minute adjustments could not solve. Wearing the dress for the last time, before the wedding, made me cry. After tomorrow, I'd say goodbye to my kingdom. From my childhood and my whole life up there.

Luke entered the room, taking me out of my thoughts, saying he wanted to talk to me, but he quickly shut up and looked astonished at me.

- What happened, Luke? What is more urgent than my wedding preparations? - I spoke acid.

- I can wait. Your Highness will change, and maybe you can take a walk with your childhood friend in the garden? - he spoke, sounding more like an order than a suggestion.

- Yeah, but get out now so I can change my clothes, please. - I answered roughly.

He's gone. My servant helped me put on my blue dress. I left the room, closing the door behind me. I went to the garden, it was almost lunchtime, but I asked the king to allow me a little delay so that I could talk to Luke. In the garden, Luke was waiting for me on the bench where I used to sit, while I was waiting for those sad days.

- Talk to me, my friend.- I said in a hurry

- Tell me that Your Highness will not continue with this madness! -  he said, advancing towards me, taking my hands.

I was already impatient and angry with his insistence.

- You really wish to marry a creature of darkness, which can not give you a future or heirs! Does the king know what he's going to do? - he seemed anxious.

- Luke, I love Phillip. I know what you feel for me, but I want you to respect my feelings for my fiancé. Nothing will make me change my mind!

- But what's your life going to be like? How can he live in an eternal night? - And the heirs?

- I've talked to him. He can give me children, but it's not something I want right now. He won’t live in darkness. In his kingdom, there is a spell, and we have already seen a sunset together. - I replied assertively.

- So I can't have any more hope? - he asked desolate, lowering his head and staring at the ground.

- I have you as a brother, Luke. But that's all. My heart is his.

I realized that it had been a long time, and we probably missed lunch. The king would get angry.

- I have to go back, I need to eat, I’m hungry. - I almost whispered.

We went back into the palace, and the dining room was already empty; everyone had already had lunch. I asked Anna to bring something for me to lunch in my room.

When I got to my room, I noticed a shadow near the window. There was my prince. But his expression was angry.

- Why weren't you at lunch today? Your father said you'd be late, but you didn't go, and I saw you get out of the castle. What is more important than your health? - I clearly noticed the irritation in his voice

- Luke called me to talk. - I spoke, holding my breath – it seemed important.

Phillip, who was with his fists closed, struck the wall next to the window.

- What did he want? What else does he want? - he spoke with rage in his tone

I walked quickly to him and hugged him, resting my head on his chest.

- He thought he'd still be able to convince me to give up the marriage.

A knock at the door interrupted us. It was Anna bringing a tray with lunch. The smell made me salivate. I took the tray and asked her not to let anyone interrupt me, because I wanted to eat quietly. I put the tray on the table next to the window and sat in the chair in front of the table. I asked Phillip to sit down.

- I need to eat. My dress needed adjustments. I don't want any further adjustments, no further postponements. - I spoke with a smile on my face.

- How? But you said you were talking to Luke about giving up...

- He wanted me to give up, but I asked him to respect my decision and that my heart was yours! - I looked at him as he spoke, taking with a fork a portion of food in my mouth. I was actually hungry. But Phillip's eyes froze on mine, and he looked hungrier than I was.

- Your Highness told him that? - he whispered

- With these words, my love. - I supplemented by putting another splash in my mouth. - Is there any other preparation we have forgotten for tomorrow? I asked, completely changing the focus of the conversation, deliberately, without Phillip's eyes diverting from me.

- How did the princess call me? - asked, looking confused.

- We're alone, you know my feelings for you, I won't call my prince for your title anymore. For now, I'll call you my love.

Phillip got up from his chair and kneeled in front of me at a speed that made me sick. Before I could proceed with my meal, he kissed my lips gently and spoke almost in a murmur:

- Please repeat, my princess. - Before he spoke again, I repeated:

- I won't call you, Your Highness, anymore when we're alone. My prince, alone, you will always be my love.- I used a sweet tone in my voice.

He pulled me to him and filled my lips with kisses. We're standing. He seemed to be in some sort of trance. We intercalated kisses with tight hugs that cut my breath. I could feel every curve of his body and his muscles under the clothes. Then he walked away and said:

- I see my beloved bride at dinner. Please don't be late. It'll be our last meal as singles.

I sat down again, finished my meal, and lay down to rest. At dinner time, I was awakened by Anna, who quickly helped me so that I was clean and beautiful to come down on time.

Chapter 43 - The eve

Tomorrow would be the big day. I woke up very late. The sun's rays did not enter my window, as the heavy curtains were completely closed. I knew it was late, for I heard the sound of the carts of merchants coming to the palace. The chariots with the banquet and an absurd amount of flowers.

I opened a small piece of the curtain. I remember I fell asleep with Phillip in my room. Where was he? I opened the door, and the guards were standing outside. Where was he? I went to the bathroom and took a nice hot bath. I still felt some pain from the weakness before, but I was better, and the hot water helped. I called Ane, who helped me get dressed. I put on a beautiful blue dress. I left the room next to my servant. We went to the dining room where I could see Phillip sitting next to the king at the tip of the breakfast table.

I stopped breathing. How? The daylight! I looked around, and all the curtains and windows of the palace were completely closed. The sun didn't come in for a moment. The king called me with a handshake, and I went to him. He pointed me to sit on his right, and Phillip was on his left.

- Good morning, Your Majesty, Your Highness. - I spoke while I sat down

- How's my daughter? Are you better today? - The King spoke, putting his hand on mine. - I thought you would be much better, but maybe we should postpone tomorrow's event a little bit more.

- No! - I answered quickly and maybe a little loudly, making a lot of eyes in the room turn to me. I could notice the look with the malicious smile on my fiancé's face. - I'm fine! I will only feed and rest for today, Your Majesty; it will be enough.

- A few months ago, the princess didn't want that day to come, but now she seems to be anxious for tomorrow. - Phillip said with a huge smile on his lips.

I was quietly staring at my food while I was eating. I preferred not to answer, as I had just finished my meal. I asked for permission and went out to the library. I entered in silence, took a book, and sat in the chair in front of a
completely closed window. This time I was able to read. It seems that having some answers to my questions helped my mind get out of the previous anxiety.

- I can give you more answers! - I heard Phillip's voice as he entered the library's door and walked towards me, sitting in the chair beside me, but I also wanted an answer.

- This looks fair enough! - I said without taking my eyes off the book. - You may ask me what you want to know.

- You told me you were falling in love with me. Your father told me about the conversation you two had when you came back to see me. May I ask what Your Highness feels about me? - he spoke by taking the book out of my hands and closing it – but I want you to answer me by looking into my eyes.

- Yes, I'm completely in love with you, Phillip! - I answered, looking into his eyes and bringing my face closer to his. - You protect me, and you seem to want to take care of a stubborn girl like me, so... I hope that's the answer you're looking for.

He lay down on his armchair and looked straight at me.

- Can you leave this book, please? - he spoke after a few moments.

- We can talk, but anyone can come here and listen to us. - I said quietly

He got up quickly and, almost like a shadow, went to the door, turned the key to lock, and sat back in his chair.

- Now we'll have a little more privacy. What else did you want to know about vampires? - he asked, taking the book from my hand and throwing it over a distant table.

- What... what was that? How did you lock the door? How the book went... - I spoke more whispering than talking, shaking.

- Vampires are perfect hunters. Speed is natural, hard to control, and strength, and precision too. - But I don't want you to be afraid of my abilities; they will only serve me to take care of you and protect you.

He approached his face to mine as he spoke, with his lips almost touching mine. And in a whisper, he added:

- I love you, my princess! - he ended the sentence by giving me a slight kiss that quickly turned into a deeper kiss.

When we backed away to take our breath, I asked:

- How do you know you'll never hurt me? - The question came out like an arrow that quickly hit Phillip. He stepped away, got up from his chair, and started walking from side to side of the library.

- In fact, there are some instincts that I can't control, but most of them I can control. There's a constant desire to bite you and taste your blood, but all this time we've been together, I've managed to control it. Apparently, being with you filled this desire.
- he spoke with some tension and passed his fingers through his hair.

I sat down. Thinking. I thought I would get old, but he didn't.

- And the issue of my aging. I'll get old and die. Unless you... - I stopped imagining in the fear of imagining myself as an eternal creature.

- Again, one more issue I don't want to solve now. Your Highness, you're only 18. It's too early to think about aging. - he said, sitting in the chair beside me quietly –Is there any other issue that troubles him and prevents you from resting or even getting married tomorrow?

Chapter 42 - More expectations

All I needed after spending more than a month suffering from thinking that my father, my best friend, his father, and my fiancé had died at a distance, without eating or sleeping properly, was another night without sleep. A whole night awake. I was angry with Lucas for putting all these doubts in my head. Questions don't come out of my head. I couldn't ask Phillip, because maybe he shouldn't even be in the hut. Even if I were, with two guards at the door of my room, I wouldn't be able to get to the gate.

How could I say yes to him and give up the rest of my life? I would go crazy if I couldn't ask him. Did he know the answers I needed? Tomorrow I should be able to escape and get to the cottage. Perhaps I should try to do that during the day.

All the noises of the night disturbed me. Furniture cracking, the wind
blowing outside. I needed to rest. My whole body aches. I got out of bed and gave up trying to sleep. My mind couldn't turn it off. I opened my room's door and walked silently to the library.

Perhaps a book will help calm my mind. I opened the door, and it rang. I sat by the window with a little romance in my hand. After reading the same page five times without understanding the story, I put the book on the shelf and went to the door. But I felt a cold hand touching my arm.

- Phillip! - I recognized his smell and his touch on my arm.

- Your Highness should be asleep! - he said in a rough voice

- Yes, but I can't. I tried to sleep, but Lucas was talking to me about vampires, and now my mind is full of doubts and a certain sense of despair.- I said, turning to him – What are you doing here? How did you get in here? I thought I would only see you after tomorrow.

He pulled my arm so I could get closer to him. Passing his arms around my waist, he continued:

- Lucas! He actually thinks he knows everything about vampires, doesn't he? - I felt the jealousy in his voice

- I need to go back to my bedroom. I don't know how I'll be tomorrow. I'm already exhausted. But I would like to know what you're doing here? - I spoke while I put my head in his wide chest. How I loved hugging him like that. It calmed all my anxiety.

- My princess, let's go! I'll take you to your bedroom. But first, your answer. Your father was worried because you spent the whole day in your room, and he asked if there was anything I could do to help you recover before tomorrow. Well, Lucas must have said that we have some powers. I can make you sleep deeply. I've done that once, remember?

- No, I don't want to wake up in three days! - I complained with a sad face

- That's just one of the powers, my princess. I can also help you by removing your doubts. - he spoke with a malicious smile on his lips.

- I prefer this. - I answered, looking frightened at the guards, who fell down sitting on the floor sleeping deeply, with a gesture of Phillip's hand – What was that?

- Vampire powers. I don't want anyone to bother us, and you need answers. I can hypnotize humans with a gesture, so they fall asleep. Tomorrow they'll be fine. - Again, that smile on the corner of the lips.

- Lucas told me that maybe you can't... - before I finished talking, he put his finger on my lip, silencing me

- That vampires can't have babies? - He seemed to read my mind.d I missed a step when I entered the room and almost fell, but Phillip's hands were still around my waist. - You're exhausted. Are you sure you don't want to have this conversation tomorrow?

I shook my head, saying no. He shrugged his head, sharply irritated. But he went on.

- We can! There are vampires with children all over the world. These children are born as normal humans, but there's something in development that changes in adulthood. - he stopped and cleaned his throat. - So yes, I want at least three kids, my princess. But we don't have to hurry things. Do you feel better now?

- Yes, I think I'm going to lie down before I fall. - I said with a smile - Are you going to leave? Or will you stay until the wedding day? When did you arrive?

- It's a lot of questions. Your father called me today, and I came as soon as he called me, but I already brought what I needed to stay until our wedding. Then I'm not leaving. Maybe I'll take advantage of the extra time I'll have with you. But maybe you need to rest. By the way, the King told me about the conversation you had and how much my beloved princess was to say she was sure that she wanted to marry me. And now? What do you feel about me? When he finished talking and turned to see me, I was already lying in a deep sleep.

Chapter 41 - Doubts

I woke up relaxed, but the tension of the previous night's conversation gave me a strong headache the next day. Ane came to my room to get me down for breakfast, but I couldn't. I asked her to inform the king that I needed some time to rest. As soon as she returned with the answer, my servant came with a tray full of bread, cakes, and fruit, according to the king's orders. I drank coffee in my bed right now, but I spent the rest of the morning thinking.

At lunchtime, it wasn't Ane who came to get me, but the king himself. Still exhausted and with a headache, I asked him to stay in my room, and he agreed. After all, I had little time to recover, and if all that rest and food helped, he would not prevent me from spending the next days in my bedroom.

I slept a little after lunch in my room. Just before dinner, I went down to the library. This room has always been my favorite in the palace, with the garden. I read one of the books while waiting for dinner time. I was interrupted in my reading by Lucas knocking on the door and asking permission to talk to me.
I sat down with my head, and he started, after sitting in a chair in front of me:
- Can you forgive me for my indolence yesterday? - he asked, looking at the floor
- No problem, Lucas. - After talking, I cleaned my throat to go on, but everything you found out about Phillip, he had already told me somehow. We've been getting to know each other over the months. He had already asked me if I was sure that I wanted this marriage. At first, I couldn't decide; my father was clear. But the prince didn't want to force me to marry him. I believe he wanted me to love him like he loves me, but without powers, without hypnosis, just my will.
- I can't believe these creatures have feelings. But I saw him protecting the king in the Carpathians. He seems to have. I hope he protects you and takes care of you like I would. I hope you're right, Your Highness! - he got up and stood behind my chair, fell down, and spoke in my ear – but I believe you don't want to turn into such a creature, do you want to? Can you have descendants? I think your father counted on it... he came back and sat back in the chair in front of me.
- I don't know. I don't know anything about that, Lucas! I got up and walked to the door. Don't bother me with your jealousy anymore!
I opened the door, went out, and forcibly closed it behind me. A whirlwind of fear and anger passed through my body. I held up the tears that came from the bottom of my heart. I wanted children. Could Phillip give me children? I was frightened by the idea. I took a deep breath and went down the stairs to the dining room, which was very crowded today, after all, there were two days left for the festivities.
After a festive dinner, I went to the garden. My thoughts let me sleep so early. How I hated Lucas for putting all these questions in my mind. I was so sure I wanted to stay with Phillip. Damn it! I walked from side to side, sat on the front seat of a huge fountain in the middle of the garden, and felt a hand on my shoulder.
- Do you have any doubts? - I could hear Lucas's voice coming from behind me.
- Why did you do that? Why did you put these things in my mind? - I asked, grabbing his hand and throwing it away.
- Because I'm not going to lose you without fighting.- he said with a malicious smile on his lips.
I stood up and walked towards the palace, climbed the stairs, and locked myself in my room. I know I won't be able to sleep today. Damed!

Chapter 40 - Your decision

I followed him to one of the living rooms, where the king was sitting in a chair, and in another, nearby, was Lucas.

- Sit down, princess! - ordered the King with his roughest tone.

I followed up to the armchair in front of him, and Luke sat in the seat next to the King. Soon he started again:

- I need to inform you what my investigation has brought about your fiancé, - Luke pointed to me, - and which may or may not change Your Majesty's feelings about the princess's marriage.-  he finished looking at my father.

My heart seemed to stop beating. What could Lucas have discovered that would compromise the ceremony in three days? I had to concentrate to not hold my breath. The marriage could not be canceled. I want Phillip.

- Vampires have powers. They can easily seduce a prey. But Phillip has a few secrets that go beyond powers.

- Breathe, my daughter, I don't want to lose you. I couldn't protect you from the damn Claus, and who knows what else you didn't tell me, but of your nightly escape, I only knew where you were going when Phillip told me in the Carpathians.

- He built the Cottage to get closer to me. - I said as a murmur

- So he probably told you everything about him? - Luke said with his arms crossed over his chest.

- I hope so...- another almost unheard whisper.

- Phillip was the youngest son of King John; his mother, Queen Helena, died giving birth to him. His and his brother's childhood was terrible. The king went mad when his love died and was cruel to his sons. Phillip was fleeing into the woods, one day he came riding his horse when he was about twelve years old to the limits of the kingdom. He saw the beautiful girl with golden curls playing in the garden. You, princess -  he spoke, pointing to me - he saw your happiness playing alone in the garden's middle.

- He didn't tell me that. - I spoke, putting my head in my hands

- He saw your joy. He came back countless times. Your happiness playing and running through the garden made him happy, too. The twelve-year-old boy had already spent more time here than in his kingdom, and his father was angry and sent him to complete his studies in Paris.

- That's why John never talked to me again? - The king said

- If he could, if his kingdom were more powerful commercially than yours, he would go into war with Your Majesty, but he knew that he would be defeated by your army. - Luke replied.

- How do you know all this?- I asked with tears rolling down my face

- Your Highness, I investigated the same way you did in Paris when you were looking for Claus. - Luke answered

- Did my daughter go after that murderer? - said the king, putting his hand on his head and rising up.

- She will explain it better to the King, but I have to finish - said Luke, approaching my father and laying his hand on his shoulder.

- Phillip isn't much older than the princess. He went to Paris to study, but his brother did not endure the loneliness or his father's cruelty and threw himself off the palace's highest tower. Phillip couldn't stand this loss and the distance of his great love anymore. It was at a moment of his weakness that Claus turned him into the vampire he is today. But unlike Claus, he only drank human blood once. He's not a cruel vampire. On returning, he searched for the princess and knew that she would be old enough to marry. It was at this moment that he came to the king to get the princess's hand... - Luke finished cleaning his throat and sat back.

- He told me almost everything... - I said in a lower voice - and I met him the night before the engagement. It was my first escape from the palace and the first time I saw the cottage. He saved my life in the woods, from wolves...

- Why did you go after Claus? - The king sat back in his armchair and looked right through me

- Phillip was going to die. He got sick. Only Claus could help with the cure. I was afraid, but I couldn't lose it - I replied, looking into the eyes of the king

- My daughter, I need to know from you, do you want to marry the prince? - he asked me

- I didn't want it before, but I want it now. I risked my life for him... and I know I would do it again.

- That's right. I need you to rest. The ceremony will be in three days. Until then, you can't escape at night. No more risks. I'll put two guards at your door. Your Highness does not leave the palace until the end of the ceremony.

I agreed with my head and left the room towards the stairs. Lucas followed me and held my arm.

- You know I have feelings for you? - he spoke, coming very close to me. - You're sure you want to marry a creature like Phillip.

- He's not a creature! I'm getting married to Prince Phillip! - I said, freeing my arm from
Luke's grip - You're like a brother to me.

I quickly went upstairs, entered my room, and closed the door. I was exhausted. I fell into bed and fell asleep quickly.

Chapter 39 - One night

- Taking you home. You need to rest. In three days, you need to be better and healthier. I don't want you running more risks. So one of the witches from my kingdom throws a protective spell, and nothing will happen to you, the king, or any nobleman inside the palace. And in three days I'll be back for our wedding. I've told everything to your father, and he already knows I'm a vampire. I told him absolutely everything about the Carpathians. I wanted him to understand what was going on. He knows what happened in detail and wants to talk to you tomorrow.

- What? - Talk about what? - I asked nervously

When I told him who I was, I told him that I accepted if the king gave up our covenant and understood that he would not allow our marriage. I gave up on you, but he said that before he made that decision, he needed to talk to you. He wants you to decide if you still want me as your fiancé, or not. I told him I wouldn't even use my powers to convince you to stay with me. So, today you go back to the palace, and we'll only see each other again if Your Highness says you want me.

- How? I thought I couldn't decide on marriage, but now I can. - I almost vomited the words.

Phillip put me down when we got to the palace door.

- Here I say goodbye to you. Forever? - he asked as he hugged me, putting me close to him.

- B... but I... - Before I could speak, he kissed my lips, quickly turned, and disappeared into the darkness of the night.

How I would solve that. At least I had until tomorrow to think. No, I definitely didn't want to live without Phillip by my side. But all the terror of the last year struck me. Was it all over? Would there still be any more moments of horror...

I took a deep breath, entered the palace, and almost fell back when I saw Luke's shadow standing near the huge doors of the main hall.

- Princess, where have you been? - he asked, holding my hand

- I had to do something today. - I answered almost in a gasp

- Did you go see Phillip? - he spoke, looking right into my eyes

- How do you know? - I was confused

- When you told me he was a vampire, the night we killed Claus, I decided to do a brief investigation into your fiancé.

- How? What did you do? Are you mad? - I asked, letting anger take care of me.

- I've been dealing with this kind of creature a few years ago in the Carpathians. My dear princess thought I would let you join one of these creatures without knowing exactly why he's so interested in marrying you. And your Highness knows why Prince Phillip loves you so much? He asked, loosening my hand and walking to another room, calling me to follow him.

Chapter 38 – They Returned

When I finally got up, I got a hug from my father, the king. Lucas took me on his knees and repeated the question:

- What happened, Your Highness?
- A few days ago, I received a letter from a servant of yours... - I took the folded paper from the middle of the book that I was carrying and handed it to Luke's father, who gave it to the King, who followed towards the entrance to the palace.
- That bastard! He tried to kill her! - I could hear my father murmuring as he showed the paper to Lucas.
- What? - I asked when Lucas held me standing up in the palace hall.
- Claus's son, before he died, said we'd have a surprise when we returned. Probably, he thought you'd kill yourself. - He said, holding me to prevent me from falling again.

We continued walking to the dining room, where dinner was served. Many of the nobles who were waiting for the wedding congratulated the king on his arrival. We sat in our seats, and for the first time in months, I finally ate. I still missed Phillip, but I was sure he't come until dark.

After dinner, everyone gathered, and the king recommended that I rest, because in three days he would perform the ceremony. In my room, I sat in front of the window thinking if Phillip would come to see me, how would he be? None of the three, my father, Luke's father, or Luke himself, told absolutely nothing about what happened in the Carpathians.

Anxiety was killing me. It was already midnight when I decided to hang out and run through the woods to the cottage. There it was. I entered and quickly got downstairs into the crypt; it was dark, and only a torch lit that frozen chamber. I removed the lid from the coffin, but it was empty.

- Where are you, Phillip? - I whispered low, looking at the empty coffin.

- I kept my promise! - I heard his voice in my ear, behind me. I felt his hands on my shoulders.

- Why didn't Your Highness go to the palace? - I asked, turning around to look him in the eyes.

- Because I knew you would come here. But you're not okay, you shouldn't have come! - he spoke, looking at me with concern.

I took advantage of his proximity to hug him strongly by pressing my face to his chest.

- How are you? What happened? How did you get back? - I asked, holding my head away to look Phillip in the eyes, but without releasing him from my embrace.

- Calm down, I'll answer all your questions. But first, I wanted to apologize for making her sleep for three days. But you needed to rest, and you would still go through so much worry, with no one around to take care of you. - he said, removing a sling of my hair behind my ear.

- I'm fine. - I spoke in Phillip's eyes.

- My princess must have met her father and Lucas, so I know she knows they're all okay. I'm fine, being sure Claus's son is dead, so he can't try to kill you or your friend Lucas anymore. An excellent vampire hunter, by the way. He traced the hiding place where the army sheltered during the day and killed them while they were asleep. I guarded Lucas's father's castle at night. When the vampires tried their best to invade him. It took us many days to get rid of the vampires he enlisted. Now it's my turn to ask. - he took me away from his hug, and I sat down on the stairs behind me.

- When I left, you weren't that pale or that weak. - What happened to you? - he asked, coming towards me.

- A few days ago, I received a letter that looked like a servant of Luke, saying they were all dead. I was frightened, scared, and lost my ground. I didn't know what to do, I thought I'd keep waiting for you to come back, but I was already doing it with no hope. I cried, I didn't sleep, I did not eat, I couldn't... - I spoke with a tear escaping in the corner of my eye – I thought of dying.

- Don't say that. - Phillip spoke, coming very fast to me and taking my hand.

- What about the wedding, my prince? - I spoke, looking at the floor."

- You know my feelings for you, my fiancé. - he spoke by raising me from the floor and climbing the stairs to the cottage with me.

- But you should have gone to see me sooner than you arrived. Why? Why did you stay here, but didn't come to see me? - I asked, climbing into the cottage with difficulty caused by the weakness that my legs felt.

- I need to tell the truth to my beautiful princess. I wanted to know if you would come to see me. I wanted to know if you still wanted me, as you showed me before my departure.- he spoke by putting his hand on my back, quickly holding me in his arms, and carrying me up the stairs.

- The forest has wolves, Your Highness knows the risks – I spoke with a slight malicious smile in the corner of my mouth.

- I could hear you coming. I heard his restlessness while he was in his room after dinner. But I didn't know if you'd sleep or come to me.

In the cottage, I thought he'd put me in bed, but he didn't. He continued walking, went out the door, and went on walking to the palace.

- What are you doing? - I asked, looking at him, who did not let me go and walked naturally as if I did not weigh in his arms.

5.20.2024

Chapter 37 - Sad days

- Three days? How? - Did you even try to wake me up? - I asked Ane having a panic attack.

- I tried, Your Highness! I couldn't. Our doctor didn't even do it. - She answered, afraid

I finished my breakfast, and I was starving. I got up and went to the library, took a book, and decided to sit on a bench in the palace's garden. I couldn't read a word. I began to wander through the dark thoughts that floated in my mind. I provoked all this. Why did I go to Claus? Phillip made me sleep for three days. It was night, and Ane came to pick me up for dinner and sleep.

The next few days were the same. I was sitting on the same bench. I was digressing. She read the books I picked up at the library. I lost count of how many books I read. I seemed to be constantly hypnotized by the gate. My eyes just turned away from the pages of the books to that gate.

After a month, a messenger arrived with a letter. I opened it anxiously, and it was one of the worst things I've ever done, inside a paper stained with blood:

Your Highness,

He who conveys to you this painful news is the faithful servant of the Lord. Lucas.
My master, Prince Phillip, his father, and my master's father died in a fierce battle. They fought honestly, but they couldn't win.
At this hour, ur servants who remained alive in the Carpathians and were not transformed into monsters are running for their lives.
I'm so sorry.
I don't think I'll survive...

The writing was interrupted in a huge scrawl. And now? What would I do? How could I overcome the pain and continue my father's rule? I climbed the palace stairs and locked myself in. Three more days were lost. I stayed locked in my room, crying and sleeping. After my brief mourning, I thought of the kingdom and of all who depended on a ruler able to command the; I knew I had no such ability.

After a hot bath, I decided to go down to lunch. Many nobles were still in the palace waiting for the King and my fiancé's return. Only I knew the content of the letter; I wasn't ready to share it with anyone. But I'm starting to grasp it. I sat down again with a book, looking at the gates. What if they come back? What if the letter wasn't true?

She didn't feed me anymore. I didn't even sleep enough. It's been another week. Until I saw three familiar silhouettes landing from a carriage in front of the gate. I got u,p recognizing Luke and my father, a third lord, who looked like the Duke, Luke's father. Without smiling, I tried to run toward them. My feet failed miserably. I was too weak.

- Lucas, are you? - I ask, ed sitting on the grass with a rough voice.

- Yes, my angel, what happened to you? Why are you so pale? - he spoke, helping me stand up
